If you’re expecting a baby (congratulations!) and considering maternity photos, one of the first questions you may be asking is: when is the best time for a maternity photo shoot? As a professional family and motherhood photographer in London this is one of the most common questions I hear and hopefully this blog post will answer your question in great detail.

Best time for maternity photos: 28–35 weeks pregnant

In most cases, the best time to schedule a maternity photo shoot is between 28 and 35 weeks of pregnancy. This stage is often considered the “sweet spot” for maternity photography.

During these weeks:

  • Your baby bump is usually nicely rounded and clearly visible
  • You’re likely still feeling comfortable enough to move
  • There’s less risk of baby arriving early before your session

This timing allows us to capture that unmistakable “pregnancy glow” without pushing too close to your due date. For first-time mums especially, it can be hard to know how your body will change or how you’ll feel later in pregnancy. It also allows us time to reschedule your session if need be without stress in case something unexpected comes up or the weather is not playing ball for an outdoor session. Booking your maternity photos within this timeframe helps ensure you can relax and enjoy the experience.

The mums in the photos below were 29 weeks and 31 weeks pregnant at the time of their photo shoot, both expecting their second babies.

Can you do a maternity photo shoot earlier or later?

Life happens and pregnancy isn’t always predictable. If scheduling your maternity shoot between 28–35 weeks isn’t possible, don’t worry, there is flexibility. Some clients feel amazing well beyond 35 weeks, while others may prefer to photograph earlier due to personal comfort, medical reasons, or scheduling constraints.

If the 28–35 week window doesn’t work for you, we can adjust the timing, location, and pacing of your session so it still feels calm and enjoyable. The goal is always to photograph you at a time when you feel confident and comfortable.

Timing for twin and multiple pregnancies

If you’re expecting twins or multiples, the ideal timing for your maternity photo shoot is often earlier than a single pregnancy, typically between 24–30 weeks. With twin and multiple pregnancies, bumps tend to grow more quickly, and many mums start feeling physically uncomfortable sooner. There is also a higher likelihood of earlier delivery, so scheduling your maternity session earlier helps ensure we capture your bump at its best while you’re still feeling comfortable and mobile. As always, every pregnancy is different, and I’m happy to recommend the best timing based on how you’re feeling and your individual circumstances.

Outdoor vs in-home maternity photo shoots

Maternity photo shoots can take place outdoors in the nature or in your own home, depending on the look and feel you prefer and the season we're in. Outdoor maternity photography offers natural light, open space, and a timeless, romantic feel. An in-home maternity session is perfect if you’re looking for an intimate and cosy feel in a comfortable environment or you prefer not to travel. Both options are beautiful, and I’m happy to help you choose what suits your family best.

Why golden hour is perfect for outdoor maternity photography

If you choose an outdoor maternity shoot, I strongly recommend scheduling your session during golden hour, typically 1–2 hours before sunset.

Golden hour provides:

  • Soft, flattering light
  • Warm tones and a natural glow
  • A dreamy, timeless look in your maternity photos

You can see some examples from two separate golden hour maternity sessions below. I’ll always guide you on the best start time based on the time of year to ensure your images look their absolute best.

Final thoughts on maternity photo shoot timing

While 28–35 weeks is generally considered the best time for maternity photos, the most important thing is choosing a time that feels right for you. Pregnancy - whether it’s your first or not - is a season worth remembering, and my maternity sessions are all about celebrating this chapter in a way that feels natural and stress-free.

If you’re expecting, I recommend getting in touch early - ideally at the start of your second trimester - to give us plenty of time to plan ahead and choose a timing and location that works best for you. However, if you are already in a later stage in your pregnancy but still keen to book a maternity session then do reach out and I will do my very best to accommodate you. Many of my clients also choose to book their newborn session at the same time, ensuring everything is organised well before baby arrives.
